Josephine Anan-Ankomah Honored with Doctorate for Advancing Women’s Financial Inclusion in Africa

Josephine Anan-Ankomah, Regional Executive for Central, Eastern, and Southern Africa at Ecobank and Managing Director of Ecobank Kenya, has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Laws (honoris causa) by the University of Ghana. This honor recognizes her remarkable contributions to Africa’s banking and financial sector.

The award was presented following her delivery of the 2025 Aggrey-Fraser-Guggisberg Memorial Lecture, themed “Her Money, Her Power: Making Finance Work for Women.” Over two days, she addressed the financial challenges women face, the importance of gender-inclusive banking policies, and strategies to support women-led businesses.

The ceremony, held at the University of Ghana’s Great Hall, was presided over by Chancellor Mrs. Mary Chinery-Hesse, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, and other senior officials.

In her lecture, Anan-Ankomah emphasized that women are systematically excluded from financial services, despite their economic contributions. She highlighted a $17 trillion financing gap, stressing that financial systems must evolve to accommodate women’s distinct needs.

With over 30 years of experience, Anan-Ankomah plays a key role in shaping Africa’s financial landscape, overseeing operations in 18 countries and managing nearly 30% of Ecobank Group’s balance sheet.
