#Building on the Foundation already laid.
So in 1995, off I went to Senior Secondary School. Within the first week at Ghanata Secondary School, Dodowa – I did the predictable by joining Scripture Union and whiles there, I became part of the union’s choir. The Gospel Vibrators (yeah we vibrated the Gospel) and was also part of the school choir. I later became the leader and music director. If you know how SHS choirs work. loool, we created our own workable remixes that fitted our situation. It was fun! I learnt to work with all kinds of people which built my interpersonal skills. I also learnt how to teach songs in parts etc.
The only thing I really regret at this point was the lack of sound music instruction and a mentor to guide. I used to read available material from by Rev. Tom Bright David which really has been a blessing, but mostly I learnt by observation and by ear. My inability to learn how to play a musical instrument made matters worse. Unfortunately, the economic situation did not permit any such opportunity. Yet, I did not allow anything to stop me. I learnt to surround myself with people who were much better than me, and was always the first to admit my inadequacy and seek for help. This overtime taught me to value the giftings of others and to know seek their good as well as mine.
I spent most of my vacations with my Grandmother in Accra and eventually came to stay with her after Secondary School.
Whiles in Accra, I was fellowshipping with Trinity Congregation of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana near the Dansoman Keep Club. Between the year 1995-98, the youth of the church acquired a set of musical instruments to aid in church services..( only God knows the fight we had to fight to be permitted to use them as part of services). This afforded a number of us the musical types the opportunity to grow a step further. Whereas some of my friends took to the instruments, I was more drawn to the microphone. The passion to sing was so strong I missed the opportunity to learn an instrument.
The period of 1995 to 1998 was awesome in terms of my musical growth. Whenever we had time, we would rush to the church premises and rehearse from morning till evening. This continued till we finally got our opportunity to lead praise and worship during a youth week celebration. I was to lead.
The first time I heard my voice through a microphone, was at the rehearsal for that youth week ministration. We connected the Yamaha microphone to an old Torque multi purpose combo. When I sang into the microphone, one of the team members exclaimed in shock…” your voice sounds like that of a monkey” (in Ga oooo). heeeerrr it was so discouraging. I know she didn’t mean it, but that complex stayed with me for a while. Thankfully, the ministration went well and I received lots of positive feedback which encouraged me to do better.
Let me say a big thank you to the YPG of Trinity Presby, Dansoman for that initiative. Especially to the Bros Eugene and Divine Matey, to my brothers Nana Adi Appiah and Adolph Cyril Reinhold, and all the others who have been a part of my story.
I composed my first song in 1998 and ministered it during a youth talent show at the church. It is the funniest song I have ever composed and have never repeated it anywhere, but it was the shaky steps towards an interesting future that is still unfolding…
In the next part..I will share how, a Ga Adangme boy, who speaks a pitiful semblance of Twi, with a heavy Ga accent, became a prolific composer in Akan.!! Talk of miracles.. They still do happen!!
To be continued.
Lesson
Ministry is like running a marathon with many junctions, twists and turns.
It’s not like a sprint…that ends as it starts.
God will allow you to go through a long time of preparation, to prepare you for maximum impact.
Israel, Joseph, David, even Jesus!!!
Be patient with God and yourself. God is in working!!
