Women Empowerment Foundation International (WEFI) has made a passionate appeal, especially to the youth, to shun promiscuity as Valentine’s Day is celebrated. Valentine’s Day, also called Saint Valentine’s Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is an annual holiday celebrated on February 14.
It originated as a Western Christian liturgical feast day honoring one or more early saints named Valentinus, and is recognized as a significant cultural and commercial celebration in many regions around the world, although it is not a public holiday in any country.
However, in contemporary times, Valentine’s Day has come to be associated with promiscuity, particularly among the youth, but WEFI Executive Secretary Naomi Opoku Agyemang is urging the public to observe the day in moderation.
Valentine’s day symbolizes love, peace and unity in relationships across the world. However, it is the youth that are often seen to express themselves the most during this period.
It is in this vein that Women Empowerment Foundation International (WEFI), a non-governmental organization (NGO), has condemned the sexual immorality that has come to be associated with Valentine’s Day.
“To the youth out there, especially the young ladies, they should not indulge in indiscriminate sexual acts in the name of celebrating Valentine’s Day,” the organization said in a statement issued to commemorate Valentine’s Day yesterday.
The NGO said Valentine’s Day was not all about sex, as many people, especially the youth, had come to accept.
The statement, signed by the Executive Director of WEFI, Mrs. Naomi Opoku Agyemang, said; “Valentine’s Day is a day of showing love, which does not necessarily mean sex.
“Love can be expressed in many forms. For example sharing the good things you have with others, helping the depressed feel that there is hope through words of encouragement and others.
“This is a day of showing love, not a day of having sex. Love is deeper and it goes beyond having sex. Sex is just a fraction of showing love and it comes in when married couples decide to show love in that regard,” it said.
Girls, the NGO said, must guard against unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases that could ruin their future.
As the youth enjoyed the day, the organization advised them to be wary of sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV/AIDS and the health implications of drug abuse, smoking and drinking; and also of illicit sex.
The statement, therefore, encouraged the youth to carry the ideals and spirit that Valentine’s Day brings throughout the year and seize the opportunity to look to the future with optimism and ensure that the peace and stability enjoyed in the country was maintained.
“We expect the ideals of Valentine’s Day to reflect in the lives of our youth; and we expect them to use this occasion to promote positive activities among their peers and not engage in any negative acts that will jeopardise their future. As the youth enjoy the day, the advice is to beware.
“WEFI cares about women, young ladies and girls so we want them to keep themselves decent on Valentine’s Day,” the statement said.
