The election happened on the 4th of August, 2022, at the 30th biennial General Council Meeting of the Assemblies of God church, attended by more than three thousand delegates at the University of Cape Coast, Ghana.
Rev. Dr. Wengam takes over from Rev. Professor Yaw Frimpong- Manso, who has been General Superintendent for 12 years.
In his speech, Rev. Dr. Wengam said “first things first” and so his first step as the General Superintendent is to “unite Assemblies of God, Ghana for true spiritual revival and greatness.”
He also gave an assurance for “visionary and progressive leadership of integrity, shift, speed, open heavens, and fulfilment of the Great Commission.”

Rev. Dr. Wengam stated that, Assemblies of God, Ghana was the first to; establish a Bible School, a Radio Ministry, use social action activities to win souls, and transform communities. It was also the first church of Assemblies of God worldwide to produce a President and a Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana and most importantly, it used to be the leading Pentecostal Church in Ghana. He therefore beckoned all the leaders to support him to continue the good works.
He declared: “we will regain our position to become the leading Pentecostal Church.” Ours is a church destined for greatness and greatness is our portion. Remember, we are products of the Azusa Street Revival.”
Rev. Dr. Wengam acknowledged that his journey to the highest office of Assemblies of God, Ghana, has been rough and tough as he endured odds, resistance, false accusations and misrepresentations but He expressed profound appreciation to God for raising him for that assignment, adding that “ it’s victory for the ordinary local pastor who may never become District Pastor, Regional Superintendent or Executive Presbytery Member but who now has hope that indeed God still raises Davids from obscurity to prominence. The lesson to all is that we should not put the law above grace.”

BIOGRAPHY
REV. DR. STEPHEN YENUSOM WENGAM comes from the North East Region of Ghana; Paknatik precisely, in the Bukpurugu-Yoyoo district. He was born to the late Matthew K. Wengam and Mrs. Deborah Wengam on 19 September 1972 at Tema Community Four in Tema He had four siblings of which three passed on by the time he turned six years.
As prophecies of Christ abound in the Old Testament, so was Rev. Wengam’s fate as a pastor revealed during his christening.
From the line of prayer of the late J.C. Tetteh, his parents knew that he would be a servant of God so they brought him up in discipline, preparing him for the task ahead.
As young as five, he would assemble other children, his colleagues and try to preach to them by mimicking other men of God’s preaching.
Stephen Wengam was inseparable from his pastor, leaving his parents no choice but to get used to the regular visits of their son to the mission house during school vacations.
In 1985 that he gave his life to Christ and has never looked back since then, lest he turns into a pillar of salt.

MARRIAGE LIFE
Rev. Wengam has a beautiful family with Lady Rev. Monica Wengam and the union is blessed with two adorable children; seven-year-old Ithra Nana Frema and five year old Matthew-King Baanaan.
The immediate past Superintendent of the Assemblies of God, Ghana, Reverend Professor Paul Frimpong-Manso, applaudedthe couple for blazing a trail for troubled marriages during their 20th year marriage anniversary on February 14th, 2021. Rev, Frimpong Manso stated; “If you have been able to stick together for two decades and counting happily, it tells me of the investments both of you must have made in love, tolerance and commitment. And for that, I salute you”.

The couple deserved that compliment because life was not easy as the couple had to wait for 14 years for children.
“You had to endure pressure from family and friends who were not sensitive and sometimes would ask sarcastic questions as if children are mangoes that you just go and pluck.
But according to Rev. Dr. Wengam, it was one of the most cherished moments of their marriage as he and his wife bonded. “If we are to come back into this life again, I will still choose that path”, he said happily. “We learnt patience, tolerance, and the greater purpose of marriage, which is not for childbirth but fellowship. Children are only a bonus from God,” he said.
