THE CHURCH AND ITS MUSICIANS by Fant Moin
So alot going on here about paying musicians or not to ….Before I share some thoughts. I’m rather surprised that Christians cannot disagree on a matter, make their case without necessarily being rude or insulting.
On that note if you are abusive under this post ..comment will be deleted.
Please consider these.
1. When you qualify the music profession as ONLY a “gift” without the consideration of it being a profession as well then you will definitely miss the point and largely go about the issues from an emotional point.
Again if you try to equate music to other departments within the church that are not professions then I doubt you really understand what music is and who a professional musician is.
Please take it cool wai no vex, we learn everyday!
Again if your definition of a professional is by formal qualification alone then you probably will muddy the waters of this engagement. Please do some research on the subject wai.
IT IS A SKILLED PROFESSION AS WELL AS A FORMAL ONE
So your best comparison to the professional musician is the painter , mechanic or even teacher in the church.
Also it’s important to note that not everyone who is involved in music in the church is a professional musician – this post is addressing professional musicians. So please don’t come and add every one in the choir and muddy the discourse 😂
With that out of the way
2. When you assume that every church must necessarily employ professionals to get the work done then you will miss the point and will go about cursing church leadership.
There are some carpentry works in some churches that the leadership will rather have it done free of charge by a member who is not a carpenter but knows about how to hit a hammer on a nail and not necessarily go for a carpenter to do a professional job.
It could be church policy or simply because the church cannot afford it. However the consequences, that is the decision of the church
IF YOU ENGAGE A CARPENTER IN THE CHURCH AND HE CHARGES A FEE FOR THE SERVICE, IS HE A BAAAAAD MEMBER ? ☺
If the church is happy to have it done that way, one can only advocate for the church to use a professional in doing such works especially if we have such professionals within the church who consider the church a potential client or costumer. It can never be a right to insist on the church to use you. I think dialogue is the way to go because your service is not for free and the church will not make such a decision lightly.
Most churches have for instance children ministry that requires professionals to get the work done properly, but do we really employ professionals to do that job? Some churches do but that cannot be a general rule for all churches to follow because such dynamics may come some financial demands that not all churches can handle easily. We can only advocate for our churches to begin to look at the bigger picture because its really a big deal training kids. Dialogue!
We cannot get these issues onto the discussion table by attacking church leadership and demanding that it be done that way at all cost. Dialogue!
3. Different churches have different music demands so it cannot be a single approach to this issue by all. Some churches will definitely need a professional to handle the music of the ministry while another church will not, by the music demands of the ministry.
4. When an artisan or professional within the church ask to be paid for a service he/she is to render to the church that alone doesn’t make the person an “anti church ” person and somone who does not support the ministry. That is His work! If the church cannot afford to pay, check for other options that works Best for the church.
Please don’t call such individuals names!! Not the way to go .
5. Let’s teach our members the blessing that comes with giving to the Lord in service and allow them to decide to do same willingly. It should not be imposed on any professional to render a service for free. Let them decide upon the teaching you have given them.
But no matter the dynamics in your ministry, friends, try your best not to do the work grudgingly – paid or not – That is the difference in serving as a professional in church to other places that you could work .
