The Foundations
Well, where do I even start..? Let’s start this way.
My motive for doing this is purely based on the conviction that a young man or woman in some corner somewhere, will be encouraged to know, that God is no respecter of persons, and He is able to take ordinary people and make them extraordinarily no matter the talents, backgrounds, tribe or creed.
I do not come from a musical home, neither did I have a dream of becoming a music minister, nor do I aspire even now to be anything more than the Lord would have me be in this area of Christian service. Growing up, all I wanted to become was a Medical Doctor( pushing some needles around).
My interest in music started around my 9th birthday when my family visited a church in at La( a suburb of Accra). During the service, two of the pastor’s children who were about my age, came to sing beautifully. During their ministration, I felt this strong urge to sing in the house of God, come over me and this has never left me! Back then, I didn’t know I could sing let alone stand in front of people.
A few years later, around 1991, my family resettled in Asutsuarev (near Akuse),at the estates of the erstwhile Sugar Factory. It was the best thing that ever happened to my family and me in particular with regards to music ministry.
To my excitement my father got a cassette player for the house. And I remember one of the first albums i heard and could sing back to was by NAKOREX ( Nat Brew, Akosua Adjepong and Rex Omar). I can actually hear the songs ringing in my “inside” right now. Then followed an album by DAVID DYNAMICS( I have searched for this man for over 10yrs now), his album introduced me to the power behind godly music…then the every morning Jim Reeves songs, also hymns by Carman and that of Maranatha singers. All this while I will sing at home..in the bathroom, the kitchen, on my way to school, a habit which got me into trouble sometimes.
I joined the Sunday school of The Eternal Life Mission Church, and became part of the Sunday School choir, called Melodious Singers. Being the tallest of the lot, I am always tempted to sing loudest, and got lots of positive feed back when we performed at the adult services…that really motivated me. Eventually, my Sunday school teachers gave me lead vocal spots so I could lead the choir. Let me use the opportunity to say thank you, to Mrs. Lucy Acquaye and Mad. Berlinda Akakpo ( aka French Madam) for believing in me that early.
After I led praise and worship at the adult service for the first time, the elders led by the head pastor Rev Assan of blessed memory, prayed for me and told me the Lord would use me in this area. I was given 1 Timothy 4:14, to hold on to…which became my ministry anchor text till date.
My Father was a member of the Full Gospel Men’s Fellowship in the area, so every month I got to travel with him to Akosombo for Full Gospel Breakfast Meetings. Apart from the sumptuous breakfast, I was exposed to the anointed music ministry of Auntie Mary Ghansah, Diana Hopeson, Rev Yawson, and many seasoned music ministers….This further strengthened my passion for it.
I sang my first solo ever, at an end of year feast for the church 0n December 19th, 1993 at Community Hall ( check central picture of the photo collage). All this period I sang without any instruments (at best, just the brass band bass drum and the conga).
